The short answer
For a coworker you do not know well or an office gift exchange, get the Owala FreeSip 24 oz; it looks good and everyone uses one. For a friend who drinks ice water all day or commutes by car, get the Stanley Quencher H2.0 40 oz, with a handle and a base that fits car cupholders. For someone at a desk whose coffee or tea always goes cold halfway through, get the Ember Mug 2, the most surprising gift of the four. For an iPhone user who travels a lot, get the Anker MagGo 10K magnetic power bank. Keep in mind that the Stanley and Owala are not meant for hot drinks, the Ember cannot go in the dishwasher, and power banks must go in carry-on bags, never checked luggage.

Owala FreeSip 24 oz Stainless Steel Water Bottle
Entry level
- Best for
- Office gift exchanges, Secret Santa and coworkers you do not know well; friends who carry water to the gym, school or work; anyone who wants something good-looking.
- Why we like it
- The lid works two ways. Sip through the built-in straw, or tilt it back and drink from the wide spout. A button pops it open, and the carry loop doubles as a lock, so it is less likely to open in a bag. Triple-layer insulation keeps drinks cold up to 24 hours. It is free of BPA, lead and phthalates and has a limited lifetime warranty. It comes in lots of colors that younger people love.
- Keep in mind
- Owala says it is not for hot or carbonated drinks, so it is a poor fit for someone who drinks hot water or tea. Only the lid goes in the dishwasher; wash the cup by hand. At about 10.7 inches tall, it will not fit some backpack side pockets or small cupholders.
Stanley Quencher H2.0 FlowState Tumbler 40 oz (Cream 2.0)
Mid-range
- Best for
- Friends who drink a lot of ice water or iced coffee; anyone who commutes by car and keeps a big drink in the cupholder; coworkers who would rather not keep getting up for refills.
- Why we like it
- At 40 oz (1.18 L), one fill lasts a whole morning. The handle makes it easy to carry, and the narrow base fits most car cupholders. The lid rotates between a straw opening, a drink opening and a full cover. It keeps drinks cold for 11 hours and iced for 2 days, and it is dishwasher safe. It is made of 90% recycled stainless steel and is BPA free.
- Keep in mind
- The lid is not leakproof, so it can spill if tipped over or stuffed in a bag. It belongs on a desk or in a car, not in a backpack. Stanley does not say how long it keeps hot drinks warm; it is mainly an iced-drink cup. It is heavy when full (about 1.43 lb empty) and about 12.5 inches tall, so leave room on a small desk.
Ember Mug 2 Temperature Control Smart Mug (10 oz, Black)
High-end
- Best for
- Coworkers whose coffee or tea goes cold while they work; friends who work from home and sit through long meetings; anyone who likes clever gadgets.
- Why we like it
- A heater and battery in the mug hold your drink at any temperature you set in the app between 120°F and 145°F (50–62.5°C). On the included charging coaster it stays warm all day, and off the coaster the battery keeps it warm for about 80 minutes. You can save favorite temperatures and get a phone alert when it reaches yours. The coaster is smaller and slimmer than the first generation, so it takes little desk space.
- Keep in mind
- Hand wash only; no dishwasher and no microwave. It tops out at 145°F (62.5°C), so it keeps tea warm but cannot brew it. Brew green tea or oolong with hotter water first, then pour it in. Setting a temperature uses the phone app, though it works at its default without one. The battery wears over time, so runtime shrinks after a few years, and the warranty is 1 year.
Anker MagGo Power Bank 10K (Qi2 Certified, 15W, Black)
Mid-range
- Best for
- Friends with an iPhone 12 or later; coworkers who travel often or fly back to Asia; anyone whose phone dies every afternoon.
- Why we like it
- Snap it onto the back of an iPhone and it starts charging wirelessly, with no cable needed. It is Qi2 certified for up to 15W wireless charging, faster than many MagSafe-style banks. A fold-out stand on the back props the phone up for videos or video calls while it charges. A small side screen shows the remaining charge and roughly how long charging will take. A USB-C port adds wired charging at up to about 27W, which is faster.
- Keep in mind
- Wirelessly, 10,000mAh gives an iPhone only about 1.3 full charges, closer to 2 when wired, because wireless charging loses energy. At about 250 g it is heavier and thicker than most, and it drags in a pants pocket. Android phones need Qi2 support or a magnetic case to attach. On planes it must be in carry-on, never checked. Since June 2025, China's aviation regulator has barred power banks without the CCC (3C) mark from domestic flights, and US models usually lack it, so watch for this when connecting to a domestic flight in China.
Coworkers and friends are different
For a coworker, the main thing is to avoid awkwardness: nothing too personal, nothing too expensive, something everyone uses. For a close friend, you can pick around their habits and make it more personal.
- A coworker you do not know well, or a gift exchange: Owala FreeSip. It looks good, it is useful and it works for anyone.
- A friend who drinks ice water all day: Stanley Quencher 40 oz.
- A coworker whose coffee or tea always goes cold: Ember Mug 2.
- A friend who travels and uses an iPhone: Anker MagGo 10K.
For people who drink hot water
Many Chinese coworkers and friends drink hot water or hot tea all day, so this matters. The Stanley Quencher and Owala FreeSip are both iced-drink cups. Owala says not to use hot drinks, and the Stanley lid is not leakproof, so hot water can burn a hand or spill.
For a hot-drink person, the Ember Mug 2 fits better. It does not boil water or brew tea; it keeps tea or coffee you have already made at 120–145°F, so it is still warm when you come back from a meeting.
Office gift exchange etiquette
Many US offices hold a Secret Santa or White Elephant exchange at the end of the year, usually with a price limit. Check the rules first, and do not go far over or under the limit.
Cups and bottles are the safest gifts because nearly everyone uses one and they do not depend on personal taste. Gadgets like the Ember and the Anker power bank suit someone you know better, whose phone and habits you know.
One more step when you give it
- Owala or Stanley: when picking a color, look at the bag and phone case they usually carry. Stanley’s Cream goes with almost anything.
- Ember Mug 2: remind them it is hand wash only, never the dishwasher.
- Anker MagGo: confirm they have an iPhone 12 or later, or an Android phone with Qi2.
- A friend who flies to China often: remind them power banks go in carry-on only, and domestic flights in China require the 3C mark.

FAQ
What is a good gift for an office gift exchange?
For a coworker you do not know well, the Owala FreeSip 24 oz is the safest choice; it looks good, it is useful and everyone uses one. For a bigger budget and more of a surprise, the Ember Mug 2 is a good pick. Check whether the exchange has a price limit first, and do not go far over it.
Stanley or Owala, which is better?
It depends on how they use it. For a desk or car and lots of ice water at once, get the Stanley Quencher H2.0 40 oz, which is bigger, has a handle and is dishwasher safe. For carrying in a bag to the gym or school, get the Owala FreeSip 24 oz, which is lighter, easier to carry and has a locking lid. Neither is meant for hot drinks.
Can the Stanley Quencher or Owala FreeSip hold hot water?
Owala says the FreeSip is not for hot or carbonated drinks. Stanley lists only cold times for the Quencher (11 hours, or 2 days iced), says nothing about hot drinks, and the lid is not leakproof, so we would not use it for hot water. For someone who drinks hot water or tea, the Ember Mug 2 or a thermos with a leakproof lid is the better gift.
Can I brew tea in the Ember Mug 2?
Not really. The Ember Mug 2 tops out at 145°F (62.5°C); it keeps coffee or tea you have already brewed at a pleasant temperature. Green tea wants about 175°F (80°C) and oolong or pu-erh 195°F (95°C) or more, so brew it in a kettle first, then pour it into the Ember.
Can I take the Anker MagGo power bank to China?
You can carry it on the plane, but never put it in checked luggage. A 10,000mAh bank is within the usual airline carry-on limits. However, since June 2025 China has barred power banks without the CCC (3C) mark from domestic flights, and a US Anker MagGo usually does not carry that mark. If you are connecting to a domestic flight in China, plan to buy a 3C-marked power bank there.
Does the Anker MagGo 10K work with Android phones?
Android phones with Qi2 support attach magnetically and charge wirelessly. Others need a magnetic case to attach, or you can charge them with a USB-C cable.
