The short answer

For bedrooms and nurseries, get the Levoit Classic 300S, with a 6-liter tank and quiet enough to run all night. For a living room or open-plan space, get the Levoit OasisMist 1000S, whose 10-liter tank runs up to 100 hours. If you have hard water, do not want to buy distilled water, and do not want white dust on your furniture, get the Honeywell HEV615 evaporative humidifier, which makes no visible mist but needs regular filter changes. All three are US 120V models and will not work on China's 220V power.

Levoit Classic 300S Smart Ultrasonic Top-Fill Humidifier (6 L)

Entry level

Best for
Bedrooms, nurseries and home offices; light sleepers who want to run it all night.
Why we like it
A 6-liter tank runs up to 60 hours on low according to Levoit, for rooms of 215–505 sq ft. You fill it from the top instead of flipping the tank over and unscrewing a cap. Levoit rates it at 30 dB or less, with a night light you can turn off. The VeSync app shows real-time humidity, auto mode holds it at 40–50%, and it works with Alexa and Google Assistant. An aroma pad takes a few drops of essential oil.
Keep in mind
Ultrasonic humidifiers turn the minerals in tap water into white dust that settles on furniture and TVs, so in hard-water areas (many cities in California and Texas) use distilled or demineralized water, as the US EPA also recommends. Rinse the tank every few days to keep scale and bacteria from building up. US 120V; it will not work in China.

Levoit OasisMist 1000S Smart Ultrasonic Tower Humidifier (10 L)

Mid-range

Best for
Living rooms and open kitchen-dining spaces; anyone who does not want to refill every day.
Why we like it
A 10-liter (2.6-gallon) tank runs up to 100 hours on low according to Levoit, for 300–600 sq ft, enough for a typical living room. The tower takes up only 21.4 × 25.3 cm of floor and tucks into a corner. It is top-fill too, and Levoit rates it under 28 dB. In the VeSync app you set a target humidity and auto mode cycles to hold it; it works with Alexa and Google Assistant. A cleaning brush and aroma pads are included.
Keep in mind
It stands about 73 cm tall and is heavy when full, so put it in place before filling and do not move it full. Like the Classic 300S it is ultrasonic, so hard tap water leaves white dust; distilled water is recommended, and filling a 10-liter tank with it adds up. US 120V; it will not work in China.

Honeywell HEV615 Top Fill Tower Evaporative Humidifier with Humidistat

Entry level

Best for
Households in hard-water areas that do not want to buy distilled water; homes with a piano, wood furniture or TVs that should stay free of white dust.
Why we like it
Instead of spraying mist, a fan blows air through a wet wick filter and the water evaporates naturally, so there is no visible mist and no white dust; the minerals stay in the filter. The 1.7-gallon (about 6.4 L) tank fills from the top and runs up to 24 hours according to Honeywell. Five humidity settings, three fan speeds and a built-in humidistat adjust output once the room reaches your set level. Evaporative humidifiers naturally resist over-humidifying, so foggy windows and mold in corners are less likely than with ultrasonic models. Honeywell gives a 3-year limited warranty.
Keep in mind
The Honeywell HFT600 filter needs regular replacement, an ongoing cost; replace it when it turns stiff or yellow, since Honeywell does not state an interval. The fan makes noise and is louder than an ultrasonic model on high, so use low while sleeping. Honeywell only says it suits "large rooms" without giving square footage. US 120V; it will not work in China.

Why does the house get so dry every winter?

Many North American homes are heated with forced air in winter. Once the air is heated, its relative humidity drops sharply. Plenty of people who grew up in humid southern China hit this in their first winter here: a sore throat in the morning, nosebleeds, itchy skin, a shock from every doorknob.

A humidifier makes a clear difference, but settle two things first: how big the room is and whether you are willing to use distilled water.

Is your water hard? That decides ultrasonic or evaporative

This is the step people most often skip.

  • Soft water, or you are willing to buy distilled: go ultrasonic, the Levoit Classic 300S or OasisMist 1000S. They are quiet, need no filter, and the visible mist makes it obvious they are working.
  • Hard water and no wish to buy water every week: go evaporative, the Honeywell HEV615. With hard water, an ultrasonic humidifier leaves a layer of white dust on furniture, TVs and pianos within days.

Not sure? Look at the bottom of your kettle. Lots of white scale means hard water.

Bedroom, living room or nursery

  • Bedroom or home office: Levoit Classic 300S. It is small enough for a spot beside the nightstand, and 6 liters lasts the night.
  • Living room or open-plan space: Levoit OasisMist 1000S. The 10-liter tank lasts several days, and the tower fits beside the sofa.
  • Nursery: the Classic 300S again. Choose cool mist, keep it out of reach, and do not point it at the crib.
  • The whole floor is dry and the water is hard: put the Honeywell HEV615 in the living room or hallway; evaporative humidifiers do not overshoot.

Good humidifier habits

  • Do not push humidity too high: the US EPA recommends 30–50%. Water beading on the inside of windows means it is too humid.
  • Rinse the tank often: empty and rinse it every few days, and descale with white vinegar weekly. Bacteria in standing water is worse for you than dry air.
  • Change the evaporative filter: the Honeywell HFT600 filter needs replacing when it feels stiff or turns yellow.
  • Keep it off bare hardwood: set it on a mat or tray so drips do not damage the floor.

With windows shut all winter, indoor air gets stuffy too. Pair it with an air purifier; see Levoit Core Mini vs Coway Airmega 100.

FAQ

What is the difference between an ultrasonic and an evaporative humidifier?

Ultrasonic humidifiers such as the Levoit Classic 300S and Levoit OasisMist 1000S vibrate water into a fine mist. They are quiet and need no filter, but with tap water they spray the minerals too, which settle as white dust. Evaporative humidifiers such as the Honeywell HEV615 blow air through a wet filter, so there is no visible mist and no white dust, but the filter needs changing and the fan makes noise.

Do humidifiers have to use distilled water?

Ultrasonic humidifiers should use distilled or demineralized water, as the US EPA recommends, to reduce white dust and scale. The evaporative Honeywell HEV615 can use tap water; the minerals stay in the filter, though the filter stiffens faster and needs replacing on time.

What indoor humidity is right in winter?

The US EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30% and 50%. Too low causes dry throats, itchy skin and static; above 50%, windows fog and mold can grow. The Levoit Classic 300S and OasisMist 1000S show real-time humidity in the app, and the Honeywell HEV615 has a built-in humidistat.

What kind of humidifier is best for a baby's room?

A quiet cool-mist model such as the Levoit Classic 300S, rated at 30 dB or less. Keep it out of reach, do not aim it at the crib, and clean the tank every few days. Warm-mist humidifiers carry a burn risk and are best avoided with small children.

Levoit OasisMist 1000S or Levoit Classic 300S?

It depends on room size. The Levoit Classic 300S has a 6-liter tank for bedrooms of 215–505 sq ft; the Levoit OasisMist 1000S has a 10-liter tank for living rooms of 300–600 sq ft and runs longer per fill. Both are ultrasonic cool-mist humidifiers controlled by the VeSync app and voice assistants.
