The short answer

If she curls her hair and adds volume before going out every day, give the Dyson Airwrap i.d. Straight+Wavy. For the same dry-and-curl-in-one idea at a much lower price, give the Shark FlexStyle HD430. If she just needs a great hair dryer, give the Dyson Supersonic, with the most attachments and the best balance in the hand. For a high-speed dryer without Dyson pricing, give the Laifen Swift. All four are US 120V versions and will not work on China's 220V power.

Dyson Airwrap i.d. Multi-Styler and Dryer (Straight+Wavy)

High-end

Best for
People who curl, add volume and style every day; straight or naturally wavy hair, long or mid-length; anyone who likes new tech and does not mind using a phone app.
Why we like it
One tool dries, curls and smooths. The Straight+Wavy set is complete, with a conical barrel, a 1.6-inch long barrel, a large round volumizing brush, a soft smoothing brush, a Dryer+Flyaway smoother and a fast dryer, plus a presentation case. Airflow wraps hair around the barrel automatically, with no clamping against hot metal as with a curling iron. The i.d. version connects to the MyDyson app over Bluetooth to set heat, airflow and timing for her hair type, then runs that routine with one press of "i.d. curl"; sensitive scalps can choose lower heat. The handle weighs about 1.4 lb (0.64 kg), with 3 heat settings, 3 speeds, 1300 W and an 8.5 ft cord.
Keep in mind
It is the most expensive of the four. Curling takes some practice, so results that do not match the videos in the first week are normal. Air-formed curls are looser and do not last as long as curling-iron curls, and very thick, coarse hair that resists curling gets less out of it. The US version is 120V, and Dyson says its products are built for the voltage of the country of purchase, so it will not work in China.

Shark FlexStyle HD430 5-in-1 Air Styler and Hair Dryer

Mid-range

Best for
People who want the Airwrap's dry-and-curl-in-one idea without the price; households where more than one person will use it, with straight, curly or coily hair.
Why we like it
It comes with two 1.25-inch auto-wrap curlers (one for each direction), an oval brush, a paddle brush and a styling concentrator, covering everyday drying, smoothing and curling. Its standout feature is a body that pivots. Bent, it handles like a regular hair dryer; straightened, it takes the curlers for styling. Shark says it suits straight, wavy, curly and coily hair. At 1600 W it dries quickly, and Shark gives a 2-year limited warranty.
Keep in mind
It has fewer attachments than the Airwrap i.d. and no app or automatic curl routine. Shark's site lists two different weights (3.72 lb in one place and "just over 1.5 lb" in another), so we cannot confirm what the handheld part weighs. Like the Dyson, curls from the airflow barrels are on the loose side. US 120V; it will not work in China.

Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer

High-end

Best for
People who do not need curling tools and just want hair dry and smooth fast; anyone with long or thick hair that takes ages to dry.
Why we like it
Four heat settings, three speeds and 13 liters per second of airflow dry long hair faster than an ordinary dryer. The motor sits in the handle, so the weight stays in your hand and your wrist tires less. The US version comes with five attachments (flyaway, wide-tooth comb, diffuser, smoothing nozzle and gentle air), covering long, curly and fine hair, plus a case. 1600 W, about 1.8 lb (manufacturer figure).
Keep in mind
It only dries; it cannot curl, so styling needs a separate curling iron or the Airwrap. It costs about as much as the Airwrap i.d. The US version is 110–120V, and Dyson says it is built for the voltage of the country of purchase, so it will not work in China.

Laifen Swift High-Speed Hair Dryer

Mid-range

Best for
People who want a high-speed dryer but find Dyson too expensive; short to mid-length hair, mainly for drying rather than styling.
Why we like it
A 110,000 RPM brushless motor at 1600 W pushes air at 22 m/s, and the body weighs only about 407 g without the cord, lighter than the Dyson Supersonic. Three temperatures plus a hot-cold cycling mode, two speeds, and negative ions to cut frizz. A colored light at the back (blue, orange, red) shows the current temperature. Laifen is a Chinese brand that is better known in China than Shark, which can make it a familiar choice for a partner from China.
Keep in mind
The standard version comes with only one concentrator nozzle; the diffuser is only in the Swift Special bundle, so check which version you buy for naturally curly hair. TechRadar's review found the 1.8 m cord short, no separate cool-shot button, temperature buttons easy to press by accident, and the top setting louder than claimed. Laifen does not say whether the US version handles 220V, and Best Buy's listing for the related Swift SE says it cannot switch between 110V and 220V, so assume it will not work in China.

Start with her routine: styling every day, or just drying?

This is the biggest dividing line among these four.

  • She curls and adds volume before going out every day: choose an air styler, the Dyson Airwrap i.d. or the Shark FlexStyle HD430. Drying and curling in one tool, no separate curling iron.
  • She just wants hair dry and smooth after washing: choose a high-speed dryer, the Dyson Supersonic or the Laifen Swift. A styler can dry hair too, but a dedicated dryer is easier to use for that.

Not sure? Look in the bathroom for a curling iron. If there is one and it gets used, give a styler. If not, give a dryer.

Do Airwrap curls actually hold?

They do, with the right expectations. The Airwrap and the FlexStyle both use airflow to wrap hair around a barrel, then set it with hot and cool air. The upside is no clamping hair against hot metal, so there is less heat damage. The trade-off is curls looser than a curling iron’s and a bit less staying power.

  • Fine, straight or slightly wavy hair: best results.
  • Very thick, coarse hair that resists curling: curls drop more easily, and a curling iron may still suit it better.
  • The first time: barrel direction and section size matter, and most people get the hang of it within a few days. The MyDyson app has tutorial videos.

Long, thick hair: how to choose a dryer

The longer and thicker the hair, the more a high-speed dryer helps. The Dyson Supersonic has strong airflow and a full set of attachments: the diffuser for natural curl, the smoothing nozzle for straightening. With the motor in the handle, the weight sits close to the hand, so drying for more than 10 minutes is easier on the wrist.

The Laifen Swift wins on weight and price and dries short to mid-length hair quickly. The downside is fewer attachments, with just one nozzle in the standard version; for natural curls, choose the Swift Special bundle with the diffuser.

One extra step when you give it

  • Giving an Airwrap or FlexStyle: add a note: “Practice on low heat first and curl small sections.” Many people give up after a disappointing first try and the styler ends up in a drawer.
  • For a mother or mother-in-law: older relatives usually prefer a simple dryer, so the Dyson Supersonic or Laifen Swift fits better than a styler.
  • Sending it to China: all four US versions are 120V and will not work there. For family in China, buy the version sold in China, which also makes warranty service easier.

FAQ

What is the difference between the Dyson Airwrap i.d. and the Shark FlexStyle HD430?

Both dry and curl in one tool. The Dyson Airwrap i.d. Straight+Wavy has more attachments, is lighter, and can store a personal automatic curl routine in the MyDyson app. The Shark FlexStyle HD430 costs much less and pivots into a regular hair dryer shape, but has no app and fewer attachments.

Is the Dyson Supersonic worth it as a gift for my wife?

If her hair is long or thick and drying takes a long time every day, the Dyson Supersonic's airflow and balance really do save time, and it has the most attachments. If her hair is short and she mainly dries it, a high-speed dryer like the Laifen Swift is enough and weighs less.

Laifen Swift or Dyson Supersonic, which is better?

The Dyson Supersonic has more attachments (5 on the US version), 4 heat settings and 3 speeds, which suits long hair and curly hair that needs a diffuser. The Laifen Swift is lighter (about 407 g) and cheaper, but the standard version has only one nozzle and a short cord. For drying without fuss over attachments, get the Laifen Swift.

Can I use a Dyson hair dryer bought in the US in China?

Not directly. The US Dyson Supersonic and Dyson Airwrap i.d. are 120V, and Dyson says its products are built for the voltage of the country of purchase, while China uses 220V. The Shark FlexStyle HD430 is also 120V. For family in China, buy the version sold in China.

For naturally curly hair, an Airwrap or a hair dryer?

To keep natural curl, a dryer with a diffuser works best, such as the Dyson Supersonic (diffuser included in the US version) or the Laifen Swift Special bundle. The Dyson Airwrap i.d. Straight+Wavy is designed for straight and wavy hair; Dyson sells a separate version for curly hair.
